Eye diseases are common and without an eye test can go unnoticed for some time and therefore be harder to treat or not treatable at all. An eye test will likely improve your day-to-day life if you are having difficulty with reading small type for example. If you drive you’ll want to have the best possible vision.
An Eye Examination will:
- Ensure your child has the best possible vision
- Prevent sight loss
- Identify eye diseases before they become problematic
- Detect other possible health conditions
- Improve your quality of life
Ensuring your child has the best possible vision
You want your child to have the best possible eyesight for school work and social activities. A regular eye test through childhood will ensure the best possible start to life.
Prevent site loss
You may have an undiagnosed eye condition and catching that condition early will lead to the best possible chance of rectifying the problem.
Identify eye diseases before they become problematic
Eye treatments for diseases like cataracts, glaucoma or age-related macular degeneration are going to be more effective when caught at an early stage.
Detect other possible health conditions
Not many people realise that an eye examination can identify other health conditions where the symptoms become apparent with an eye test, for example high cholesterol, high blood pressure and diabetes can all be detected.
Specialised Examination
A fully qualified optometrist is trained to detect any abnormalities with your eyes. They will examine both the internal and external structure of your eyes.
Prevention is the Cure
We usually recommend an eye test every two years. If you have an eye problem we may recommend more frequent tests. We can then review the treatment and the success of that treatment. A test usually takes around 20 minutes although this can be longer if you do have a condition such as high blood pressure.

An eye examination usually has three parts
- Eye health screening
- Eye sight test
- Our recommendations
Eye health screening
This is to identify common eye conditions, for example dry eyes or cataracts. This may include the use of an Auto-refractor (which measures a person's refractive error during an eye exam. It will shine a light into the eye and measuring how it reflects back, this will determine the level of vision correction needed).
Non-contact tonometer, which puffs a small amount of air on your eyeball will establish your eye pressure.
Digital retinal photography, this takes a photo of your eyes using a bright flash, so we can check whether everything is as healthy as it seems.
Eye sight test
We’ll ask you some questions about your vision and your general health condition, plus we’ll ask if you are on any medication. If you’re a new client we’ll also ask some simple questions regarding your family’s health history.
Common tests include:
- A letter chart - read some lines on our chart of varying sizes
- The slit lamp – A light and magnification test to check your pupils
- A cover test – how well your eyes work together
Our recommendations
We’ll talk you through the eye examination results and offer personalised advice and if necessary treatment. Most common recommendations include the use of digital screens and avoiding eye strain. If we recommend glasses or contact lenses we’ll help you find the perfect pair for your needs.
